Google Search Console Audit Playbook for SEO
Extract maximum SEO value from Google Search Console with this systematic audit of every report and data source.
Overview
Google Search Console is the most authoritative source of SEO data because it comes directly from Google. Most SEO practitioners only scratch the surface of what it offers. This playbook walks through a systematic audit of every major GSC report to extract actionable insights.
Step 1: Performance Report Deep Dive
Query Analysis
- Export the last 12 months of query data (clicks, impressions, CTR, position).
- Identify your top 50 queries by impressions — these are your highest-visibility keywords.
- Find high-impression, low-CTR queries (above average impressions, below average CTR) — these are title tag and meta description optimization opportunities.
- Identify queries where you rank positions 4-10 — these are close-to-page-1 opportunities.
- Find queries with declining impressions over 3 months — investigate for algorithm changes or content decay.
Page Analysis
- Identify your top 20 pages by organic clicks.
- Find pages with declining traffic trends.
- Discover pages with high impressions but low clicks (CTR optimization candidates).
- Cross-reference top pages with your conversion data to identify high-value organic landing pages.
Step 2: Index Coverage Audit
- Review the count of valid indexed pages — does it match your expectations?
- Examine “Excluded” pages categorized by reason:
- Crawled - currently not indexed. Google found these pages but chose not to index them. Investigate content quality.
- Discovered - currently not indexed. Google knows these URLs exist but has not crawled them. Could indicate crawl budget issues.
- Alternate page with proper canonical tag. Expected for canonical duplicates. Verify these are intentional.
- Blocked by robots.txt. Verify you intend to block these pages.
- Not found (404). Fix or redirect these URLs.
- Track index coverage trends weekly — sudden drops may indicate technical issues.
Step 3: Core Web Vitals Review
- Check the “Good URLs” percentage for both mobile and desktop.
- Identify page groups failing each metric (LCP, INP, CLS).
- Prioritize fixing page templates that affect the most URLs.
- Track improvement trends after implementing fixes (allow 28 days for data updates).
Step 4: Enhancements Reports
Review each enhancement type that applies to your site:
- Breadcrumbs. Fix any reported errors in breadcrumb markup.
- FAQ. Verify FAQ schema is valid on all applicable pages.
- Product. Ensure Product schema has no errors (missing price, availability).
- Sitelinks searchbox. Confirm your site’s searchbox structured data is functioning.
- Videos. If you have video content, check for indexing issues.
Step 5: Links Report
- Review your top linked pages (external) — verify these are pages you want receiving link equity.
- Check top linking sites — look for suspicious or spammy domains.
- Review internal links — identify pages with the most and fewest internal links.
- Compare your internal linking distribution against your page priority hierarchy.
Step 6: Mobile Usability
- Review all mobile usability issues flagged.
- Common issues: clickable elements too close together, content wider than screen, text too small.
- Fix issues on the page template level to resolve multiple URLs at once.
- Validate fixes after implementation.
Step 7: Action Plan
After completing the audit, create a prioritized action list:
- Fix critical index coverage issues (blocked important pages, mass 404 errors).
- Optimize CTR for high-impression, low-CTR queries.
- Improve content for queries ranking positions 4-10.
- Resolve Core Web Vitals failures by page template.
- Fix structured data errors preventing rich results.
- Address mobile usability issues.
- Schedule the next GSC audit (recommended: monthly).
