Site Architecture Planning Template with Auditite
Design an SEO-friendly site architecture with this planning template. Covers URL hierarchy, navigation structure, and click depth optimization.
Overview
Site architecture determines how search engines crawl, understand, and rank your pages. A well-structured site distributes link equity efficiently, keeps important pages within 3 clicks of the homepage, and organizes content into clear topical clusters. This template helps you plan or restructure your site architecture for optimal SEO performance.
Architecture Principles
| Principle | Target | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Flat hierarchy | Max 3 levels deep for key pages | Distributes authority, aids crawling |
| Logical grouping | Content organized by topic | Builds topical authority signals |
| Clear URL structure | Reflects hierarchy | Helps users and search engines understand context |
| Internal linking | Every page within 3 clicks | Ensures crawlability and equity distribution |
| Scalable | New content fits naturally | Prevents restructuring as site grows |
URL Hierarchy Planning
| Level | URL Pattern | Example | Page Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | / | / | Homepage |
| 1 | /category/ | /features/ | Category hub |
| 2 | /category/page/ | /features/technical-audit/ | Detail page |
| 3 | /category/subcategory/page/ | /blog/technical-seo/crawl-budget/ | Deep content |
URL Rules:
- Use hyphens, not underscores
- Lowercase only
- No special characters or encoded spaces
- Keep URLs as short as practical
- Include target keyword in the URL
- Avoid unnecessary URL parameters

Click Depth Analysis
| Depth | Target % of Pages | Current % | Pages at This Depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 (Homepage) | — | — | 1 |
| 1 click | 10-15% | ||
| 2 clicks | 30-40% | ||
| 3 clicks | 30-40% | ||
| 4+ clicks | <15% |
Pages at 4+ clicks need attention. Solutions:
- Add links from higher-level pages
- Include in navigation or sidebar
- Create hub pages that link to deep content
- Add to XML sitemap (for crawling, not depth reduction)

- Avoid creating taxonomy pages with fewer than 3 posts

- No pages deeper than 4 clicks from homepage
- Priority pages are within 2 clicks
- Breadcrumbs are implemented on all pages
- Navigation includes all main category pages

Migration Considerations
If restructuring an existing site:
| Step | Description | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Map old URLs to new URLs | Every old URL gets a 301 redirect | |
| Update internal links | All internal links point to new URLs | |
| Update XML sitemap | Reflects new structure | |
| Update canonical tags | Point to new URLs | |
| Monitor crawl errors | Watch GSC for 404s | |
| Track ranking changes | Compare pre/post rankings |
Auditite’s technical audit automatically detects orphan pages, deep-buried content, broken navigation paths, and click-depth issues across your entire site structure.
