Mobile SEO Optimization Checklist with Auditite

Essential checklist for ensuring your site delivers a flawless mobile experience that meets Google's mobile-first indexing standards.

Overview

Google uses mobile-first indexing for all sites, meaning the mobile version of your content is what gets crawled and ranked. This checklist ensures your mobile experience meets every technical and usability requirement.

Viewport and Rendering

  • Meta viewport tag is present: <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
  • No horizontal scrolling on any page at any mobile breakpoint
  • Text is readable without zooming (minimum 16px base font size)
  • Content is not wider than the viewport on any template
  • No content is hidden behind “Read More” toggles that search engines cannot access

Mobile Content Parity

  • All content visible on desktop is also available on mobile (text, images, videos)
  • Structured data is identical on mobile and desktop versions
  • Meta tags (title, description, robots) match between mobile and desktop
  • Internal links are the same on mobile and desktop navigation
  • Lazy-loaded content is accessible to Googlebot without user interaction

Touch and Interaction

  • Tap targets are at least 48x48 CSS pixels
  • At least 8px of spacing between adjacent tap targets
  • No interstitials or popups that block content on mobile (violates Google’s intrusive interstitial policy)
  • Forms are easy to complete on mobile with appropriate input types (email, tel, number)
  • Dropdown menus and navigation are touch-friendly

Mobile Page Speed

  • LCP under 2.5 seconds on mobile networks
  • INP under 200ms on mobile devices
  • CLS under 0.1 on mobile viewports
  • Total page weight under 1.5MB on mobile
  • No render-blocking resources delaying first paint
  • Images are served at appropriate sizes for mobile screens (not desktop-sized)
  • Critical CSS is inlined for above-the-fold content

Mobile Navigation

  • Hamburger menu is easily discoverable and accessible
  • Search functionality is prominently available on mobile
  • Breadcrumbs are implemented and functional on mobile
  • Back-to-top button or sticky navigation for long pages
  • Footer links are organized and tappable on mobile

Mobile-Specific Technical Checks

  • No Flash content (unsupported on mobile)
  • No faulty redirects (desktop URL redirecting to mobile homepage instead of equivalent mobile page)
  • Separate mobile URLs (m.domain.com) have proper rel=“alternate” and rel=“canonical” annotations
  • App install banners do not block content
  • Video content uses HTML5 (not Flash or plugins)

Accelerated Mobile Pages (Optional)

  • AMP pages validate without errors (if using AMP)
  • AMP pages link to canonical non-AMP version
  • Non-AMP pages link to AMP version with amphtml tag
  • AMP analytics tracking is configured

Testing Protocol

  1. Test on real devices — at minimum iPhone (Safari), Samsung Galaxy (Chrome), and a budget Android device.
  2. Use Chrome DevTools device emulation for rapid testing across viewport sizes.
  3. Run Auditite’s mobile audit to catch issues across all page templates simultaneously.
  4. Verify with Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test for search engine rendering confirmation.
  5. Check Google Search Console’s Mobile Usability report for any flagged issues.

Monitoring

Set up monthly mobile audits in Auditite to catch regressions from CMS updates, new content, or design changes. Pay special attention after any theme update, plugin installation, or JavaScript library upgrade.
