Guide In-House SEO

Local SEO Setup Guide: Automated SEO Workflow

Complete guide to establishing and optimizing your local SEO presence across Google Business Profile, citations, and on-site signals.

Overview

Local SEO determines whether your business appears in Google’s Map Pack and local search results. This guide covers every step from claiming your Google Business Profile to building local authority signals.

Step 1: Google Business Profile Setup

  1. Claim or create your Google Business Profile at business.google.com.
  2. Select the most specific primary category available for your business.
  3. Add up to 9 secondary categories that accurately describe your services.
  4. Complete every available field: business name, address, phone number, website, hours, attributes, and service areas.
  5. Write a compelling business description (750 characters max) that includes your primary service keywords and location naturally.
  6. Upload at least 10 high-quality photos: exterior, interior, team, and products/services.

Step 2: NAP Consistency Audit

NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number) must be identical everywhere your business appears online.

  1. Document your official NAP format — exact spelling, abbreviations, suite numbers, and phone format.
  2. Audit your website to ensure the NAP in the footer, contact page, and schema markup matches exactly.
  3. Search for your business across major citation sources and note any inconsistencies.
  4. Create a correction list ordered by citation authority (highest authority sites first).

Priority Citation Sources

  • Google Business Profile
  • Apple Maps
  • Bing Places
  • Yelp
  • Facebook Business
  • Industry-specific directories
  • Local chamber of commerce
  • Better Business Bureau

Step 3: On-Site Local Optimization

Location Pages

If you serve multiple locations, create a unique page for each with:

  • Location-specific title tag and H1 (e.g., “Plumber in Austin, TX”)
  • Unique content describing services specific to that area
  • Embedded Google Map
  • Local testimonials or case studies
  • NAP information with LocalBusiness schema markup

Schema Markup

Implement LocalBusiness schema (or a more specific subtype) on every location page:

  • Business name, address, phone, and URL
  • Geo coordinates (latitude and longitude)
  • Opening hours
  • Price range
  • Aggregate rating (if you have reviews)

Step 4: Review Strategy

  1. Identify your top 3 review platforms (Google, industry-specific, and one general like Yelp).
  2. Create a simple review request process: email sequence triggered after service completion.
  3. Respond to every review within 48 hours — both positive and negative.
  4. Never incentivize reviews with discounts or gifts (violates platform policies).
  5. Monitor review velocity — aim for consistent new reviews rather than bursts.
  1. Join your local chamber of commerce and business associations for directory links.
  2. Sponsor local events, sports teams, or charities for .org and .edu backlinks.
  3. Partner with complementary local businesses for reciprocal referrals and content collaboration.
  4. Submit to niche-relevant local directories that are curated (not auto-generated).
  5. Create locally-relevant content: neighborhood guides, local event roundups, community resources.

Step 6: Local Content Strategy

Create content that targets local search intent:

  • “[Service] in [City]” pages for each primary service
  • FAQ pages answering location-specific questions
  • Blog posts about local events, news, or community involvement
  • Customer success stories featuring local businesses or residents

Step 7: Track and Measure

Monitor these local SEO metrics monthly:

  • Google Business Profile views, searches, and actions (calls, directions, website visits)
  • Local pack rankings for target keywords
  • Organic traffic to location pages
  • Review count and average rating across platforms
  • Citation accuracy score
