The Challenge
NewsPulse is a digital news publisher covering technology, business, and culture with a readership of 12 million monthly unique visitors. Their archive of over 50,000 articles was growing by 80 to 100 new pieces per week, creating a massive web property that demanded consistent performance at scale.
Their Core Web Vitals scores were in crisis. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) averaged 4.2 seconds across the site, with article pages often exceeding 5 seconds on mobile. The problem was rooted in the tension between editorial needs and performance: hero images were large and high-resolution because visual storytelling was central to their brand, ad units loaded synchronously because their advertising partners required specific viewability metrics, and embedded social media widgets and video players added significant payload to every article.
The performance problem had tangible business consequences. Google’s page experience signals were pushing NewsPulse articles below faster-loading competitors in search results. Their ad revenue was also suffering — programmatic ad partners had begun penalizing slow-loading inventory, and viewability scores were declining because users scrolled past ad placements before they rendered.
Previous optimization efforts had been piecemeal. The engineering team had implemented lazy loading for below-fold images and deferred some scripts, but the improvements were marginal and often undone by new features or ad integrations. They needed a systematic approach that could identify the highest-impact optimizations across 50,000 pages simultaneously.
The Solution
NewsPulse deployed Auditite with an emphasis on performance auditing at publisher scale. The platform’s crawl was configured to evaluate page speed metrics for every article in their archive, categorizing performance bottlenecks by type, severity, and traffic impact.
The audit revealed that performance problems were not uniform across the site. Articles from 2023 and earlier had different template structures than recent articles, creating two distinct sets of performance issues. Auditite’s segmentation allowed the team to create targeted fix plans for each template generation rather than applying one-size-fits-all optimizations.
The highest-impact finding was that hero images on the top 5,000 most-trafficked articles accounted for 40% of all LCP failures. These images were served at fixed 2400px widths regardless of viewport size. Auditite generated responsive image configurations for each page, and the engineering team implemented a new image pipeline that served appropriately sized WebP images based on device capabilities.
For ad loading, Auditite identified that three ad units above the fold were loading synchronously, blocking the main thread for an average of 1.3 seconds. The team worked with their ad operations partner to implement asynchronous loading with placeholder elements that maintained layout stability. Auditite’s CLS monitoring confirmed that the changes did not introduce layout shift.
Third-party scripts were the remaining major bottleneck. Auditite cataloged 23 unique third-party scripts loading across the site, many of which were legacy tracking pixels no longer connected to active campaigns. The team removed 11 scripts and deferred the remaining non-critical ones, reducing total script payload by 44%.
Auditite’s continuous monitoring was configured to evaluate every new article within an hour of publication, flagging any that failed Core Web Vitals thresholds before they accumulated significant traffic.
The Results
Over four months, NewsPulse achieved dramatic performance improvements across their entire archive:
- LCP dropped from 4.2 seconds to 1.8 seconds on average, with 92% of pages now meeting Google’s “good” threshold of under 2.5 seconds. Mobile performance improved even more dramatically, from 5.1 seconds to 2.1 seconds.
- All 50,000+ pages were analyzed and optimized, with performance improvements applied through template changes, image pipeline updates, and script management rather than page-by-page manual work.
- Ad revenue increased 38%, driven by improved viewability scores from faster-rendering ad units and increased traffic from better search rankings. Programmatic CPMs rose 22% as ad platforms recognized the improved inventory quality.
- Organic search traffic grew 51%, with the largest gains on mobile where performance improvements translated most directly into ranking improvements.
- Bounce rate decreased 29%, particularly on mobile devices where users had previously abandoned articles before they finished loading.
The engineering team reported that the removal of legacy third-party scripts reduced their security surface area and simplified their Content Security Policy configuration as a side benefit.
What’s Next
NewsPulse is expanding Auditite monitoring to their AMP pages and their upcoming newsletter web archive. They are also integrating performance checks into their CMS publishing workflow, so editors receive performance warnings before an article goes live if their image selections or embedded content exceed thresholds.
Rachel Torres reflected on the impact: “We spent two years trying to optimize performance with ad-hoc fixes that never stuck. Auditite gave us a complete picture of what was slowing us down across 50,000 pages and a clear path to fix it. Cutting our LCP in half increased both our traffic and our revenue — the ROI was immediate.”
"Speed is survival in news publishing. Every second of load time costs us readers and revenue. Auditite helped us cut our LCP in half without sacrificing our ad stack."
